International campaign calls for release of Palestinian leader Barghouti

(MENAFN) An international movement calling for the release of Palestinian political figure Marwan Barghouti was relaunched on Monday, as stated by reports. Barghouti, 66, a senior member of the Fatah party led by President Mahmoud Abbas, has remained in Israeli custody since 2002.

He is serving five life sentences linked to his alleged involvement in activities during the Second Intifada, which began in 2000.

Muqbel Barghouti, Marwan’s brother, explained that the renewed campaign features coordinated events across multiple countries, including the United Kingdom, South Africa, France, Italy, several Arab nations, and Barghouti’s hometown of Kobar in the occupied West Bank. “The campaign is part of the ongoing efforts since Barghouti’s detention to press for his release,” he said.

Demonstrations and exhibitions of paintings and drawings advocating for Barghouti’s release took place in London over the weekend. France also participated, with Barghouti having been granted “honorary citizenship” in over 50 French municipalities. British campaigners traveled to Kobar on Saturday as part of the effort, while an artist named Jimmy painted a mural on a football field featuring Barghouti alongside the phrase “Free Marwan.”

Muqbel Barghouti noted that the campaign is organized in partnership with human rights organizations and includes the involvement of Nobel Peace Prize recipients. He emphasized the urgency of securing the freedom of Palestinian detainees, “as more than 90 people have died” since October 2023. “We fear for the lives of prisoners in Israeli jails where they face difficult health and humanitarian conditions, torture, and killings,” he added.

Reports indicate that Marwan Barghouti was physically assaulted in prison by Israeli personnel, sustaining multiple rib fractures. Considered a unifying figure across Palestinian political factions, Barghouti was excluded from the list of prisoners released under a ceasefire agreement that took effect in Gaza on October 10. The agreement ended a two-year conflict in which over 70,000 people, mostly women and children, were killed and more than 171,000 injured.

The first phase of the ceasefire includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, along with plans for Gaza’s reconstruction and the creation of a new governing structure independent of Hamas.
