US Redirects Ninety Vessels Amid Strait of Hormuz Enforcement Operation
(MENAFN) The United States said Tuesday that it has redirected dozens of commercial vessels and disabled several others as part of enforcement measures targeting maritime traffic linked to Iranian ports, according to reports.
US Central Command (US Central Command) stated on social media platform X that, as of May 20, a total of 90 ships had been diverted and four others disabled in operations tied to compliance with restrictions in the region.
“As of May 20, US forces have redirected 90 ships and disabled 4 to ensure compliance.” CENTCOM said.
According to reports, the measures are connected to a blockade policy announced by US President Donald Trump affecting maritime movement to and from Iranian ports via the Strait of Hormuz.
Tensions in the region have remained elevated since strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran in late February, which triggered retaliatory attacks and widespread disruption in regional shipping routes.
According to reports, a ceasefire came into effect in April following mediation efforts from Pakistan, although subsequent negotiations failed to produce a durable agreement.
Reports also noted that Trump later extended the ceasefire indefinitely while maintaining restrictions on vessels traveling through the strategic waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, and continued disruptions have raised concerns over global supplies of oil, fuel, and natural gas.
